Carlo Ancelotti has broken his silence on Neymar's World Cup hopes, stating the attacker must deserve his spot based on form and fitness.
Will we see Neymar in Brazilian colours at the 2026 World Cup? That’s the question on the lips of fans everywhere, and now, head coach Carlo Ancelotti has finally given his answer.
The Brazil manager laid out clear conditions for the legendary forward’s inclusion in next year’s tournament. His statement comes just a day after the World Cup draw placed Brazil in Group C with Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland.
Ancelotti spoke frankly after the draw ceremony in Washington D.C., where the tournament’s path was unveiled. The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, starting in June.
Neymar, now back at his boyhood club Santos, has shown flashes of his brilliance. Despite battling injuries, he’s netted 11 goals in 26 appearances this season, keeping his name in the conversation.
But with the World Cup still months away, Ancelotti refused to hand out any guarantees. He addressed the growing speculation head-on.
“I understand you guys are very interested in Neymar. I want to clarify,” the former Real Madrid boss began. “We are in December; the World Cup is in June.”
He then laid down the rule. “When I announce the squad in May, if Neymar deserves to go, if he’s well, if he’s better or same as another, he will play the World Cup. Period.”
This means Neymar’s ticket is not automatic. His selection hinges entirely on maintaining top form and full fitness by the time the final squad is named next May.
If he makes the cut, 2026 will mark Neymar’s fourth World Cup appearance, following his campaigns in 2014, 2018, and 2022. The chase for that historic Selecao jersey starts now
