Paul’s Injuries and Surgery

On Dec. 20, Paul underwent surgery at Miami University Hospital to repair the damage. Surgeons inserted two titanium plates – one on each side of the jaw to stabilize the fractures.
They also removed some of Paul’s damaged teeth to prevent further complications.
Paul later posted updates from his hospital room on social media. He shared an X-ray image showing the plates and wrote, “Surgery went well… 2 titanium plates on each side. Some teeth removed. Have to have only liquids for 7 days…”.
He added that he was feeling “lots of pain and stiffness” in the aftermath of the surgery. In a brief video and photo, Paul gave a thumbs-up from his recovery bed and thanked his medical team.
His fiancée, Olympic speedskater Jutta Leerdam, posted a supportive heart emoji in response to his update.
