Nigeria kidnapping statistics 2025 showing monthly people abducted

Kidnapping remained a major security concern across Nigeria in 2025, with hundreds of people abducted almost every month, according to data compiled from official and independent tracking platforms.

Figures from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), HumAngle Tracker and ACLED show that abductions were widespread, cutting across several regions and affecting rural communities, travellers and farmers most heavily.

The year opened with a sharp rise in cases, as more than 600 people were reported abducted in January. Although April recorded a temporary decline, the numbers climbed steadily in the months that followed. By September, reported abductions had surged again, reflecting renewed attacks on vulnerable communities.

November stood out as the deadliest month, with over 800 people reportedly kidnapped nationwide. Security analysts link the spike to mass abductions, coordinated raids and the increasing boldness of criminal groups operating across state borders.

Despite ongoing rescue efforts, experts warn that the figures likely underrepresent the true scale of the crisis. Many kidnappings go unreported due to fear, ransom negotiations or limited access to security agencies.

The data highlights growing calls for stronger intelligence gathering, improved aerial surveillance and coordinated operations between state and federal security forces.

Without sustained intervention, analysts say kidnapping will continue to pose a serious threat to lives, livelihoods and national security.
