Iyana Meiran accident: truck crash kills two and injures three, raising fresh concerns over speeding and vehicle safety in Lagos.
Two people have lost their lives, while three others sustained critical injuries following a multiple-vehicle crash involving a heavy-duty truck in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the incident occurred at Iyana Meiran, inward Meiran Road, close to the Primary Health Centre in Meiran.
According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the crash involved a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck that collided with several commercial vehicles along the busy corridor.
Preliminary findings revealed that the truck, which was reportedly speeding, suffered a sudden brake failure. The driver lost control and rammed into a commercial mini-bus, popularly known as a Korope, along with four tricycles operating in the area.
The impact was severe, leaving vehicles badly damaged and several commuters trapped inside twisted wreckage. Two victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
Bakare-Oki disclosed that the truck driver fled immediately after the collision, abandoning the vehicle upon realising the scale of the disaster.
LASTMA officers were quickly deployed to the scene and, with the help of nearby residents, rescued three victims who were critically injured and trapped inside the crushed vehicles.
To prevent further danger, the affected section of the road was cordoned off, while traffic was diverted to ensure smooth emergency operations and avoid secondary accidents.
Security support was also provided by officers from the Meiran Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, who supervised the scene during rescue and recovery efforts.
The injured victims were taken to Mobonke Hospital along Meiran Road for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police for proper documentation and evacuation.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists to obey speed limits and ensure proper vehicle maintenance, warning that speeding and mechanical failure remain major but preventable causes of fatal road crashes.
He also expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a full and speedy recovery.
