Adeniyi Kayode trial adjourned at Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State

The trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver linked to a fatal road accident involving heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, has been postponed to February 25, 2026.

Kayode, 46, is standing trial before the Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State. The case was adjourned after the prosecution requested more time to complete key procedural steps.

Kayode was arraigned on January 2 before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun. He is facing a four-count charge connected to the accident that claimed the lives of two passengers.

The charges include dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care leading to bodily harm and property damage, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

The offences are brought under relevant sections of the Federal Highway Act, as applicable in Ogun State.

During proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, told the court that while four witnesses were listed, only three were present.

He requested an adjournment to allow the case file to be forwarded to the Ogun State Attorney General’s office through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice, citing the interest of justice.

Counsel to the defendant, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the request and stated that the defence was ready to proceed.

However, after considering the application, the magistrate granted the prosecution’s request and fixed February 25, 2026, for further hearing.

The court is expected to continue hearing the matter on the new date, once all procedural reviews and witness arrangements are concluded.

The case remains closely watched due to its tragic outcome and public interest surrounding the circumstances of the crash.
