Boxing star Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a tragic car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The tragic incident occurred last Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Reports indicate that the Lexus SUV conveying the boxing star and his team suffered a tire blowout while attempting to overtake another vehicle, causing it to ram into a stationary truck parked on the hard shoulder.
While Joshua escaped the wreckage with minor injuries, the crash was fatal for two key members of his inner circle:
- Kevin Latif Ayodele: Joshua's long-time personal trainer.
- Sina Ghami: His dedicated strength and conditioning coach.
In a chilling twist of fate, it was revealed that Joshua had originally been sitting in the front passenger seat but moved to the rear just minutes before the collision.
The driver had reportedly asked the 6ft 6in boxer to swap seats because his large frame was obstructing the view of the wing mirror.
The driver of the vehicle, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate Court. He faces four charges, including:
- Causing death by dangerous driving.
- Operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s license.
- Driving without due care and attention.
Kayode has pleaded not guilty, with his defense citing brake failure as the cause of the accident. He remains in custody pending the fulfillment of a N5 million bail condition.
After being discharged from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve, Joshua visited the funeral home with his mother to pay his final respects before the bodies were repatriated. Funerals for both Ghami and Ayodele are scheduled to take place at a London mosque this Sunday.
The boxing world continues to pour out tributes for the victims, while Joshua remains in seclusion in the UK as he recovers from the emotional and physical shock of the tragedy.
