Armed bandits have attacked the Kabe ward area of Borgu LGA, killing dozens and burning down the local market.
A wave of violence has struck the Kabe ward area of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, as armed bandits launched a deadly raid on the Kasuwan Daji community.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday, January 3, 2026, reportedly left at least 30 people dead and scores of others abducted.
Witnesses say the gunmen, suspected to be operating from the dense forests of the Kainji Lake National Park, invaded the village around 4:30 PM, caught traders and residents off guard.
The marauders focused their assault on the local market, systematically looting shops and carting away essential food supplies.
Before retreating into the forest, the bandits set the market stalls ablaze, destroying the primary source of livelihood for many in the Kabe District.
The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, stating that a joint security team has been mobilized to the scene.
"Efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims and restore order in the area are ongoing," Abiodun noted.
This latest tragedy in Borgu LGA follows a week of sustained terror in neighboring Agwarra, where a combined death toll of 42 has been reported.
Local leaders have expressed deep concern over the lack of permanent security outposts near the National Park, which has increasingly become a haven for criminal elements.
The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora also confirmed that its mission house in the axis was targeted just days prior, with the Parish Priest narrowly escaping abduction.
The local community is now calling on the Federal Government to deploy more troops to the border communities of Niger State to prevent further incursions.
The persistent attacks have triggered a fresh wave of displacement, with farmers and traders from Kabe and surrounding villages fleeing toward New Bussa for safety.
Local authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage while providing emergency support to the families of the deceased.
