Catherine O’Hara, the acclaimed actress celebrated for her roles in Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone, and Best in Show, has died at the age of 71.

Two sources with direct knowledge confirmed that the Hollywood star passed away on Friday. Her agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), later said she died at her home in Los Angeles’ Brentwood area following a brief illness. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.

O’Hara was widely loved for her range and comic timing. Many viewers remember her as the frantic mother of Kevin McCallister in the first two Home Alone films, a role that became a holiday classic for millions of families worldwide.

She later reached a new generation of fans as Moira Rose in the hit television series Schitt’s Creek, appearing in all 80 episodes. The role earned her an Emmy Award in 2020 and is often described as one of the most iconic performances in modern television comedy.

Her film career included standout performances in mockumentaries such as Best in Show (2000) and A Mighty Wind (2003), as well as appearances in Beetlejuice and its sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

O’Hara’s most recent screen work was in the Apple TV+ series The Studio, where she starred alongside Seth Rogen.

She received an Emmy nomination for the role and was also nominated for a Golden Globe, though she did not attend the ceremony earlier this month.

Born and raised in Toronto, O’Hara was the sixth of seven children. She met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, on the set of Beetlejuice. They married in 1992 and had two sons.

Her death marks the end of a career that shaped comedy across film and television for more than four decades.
