Harare murder case unfolds as court hears ex-wife’s killing linked to child maintenance dispute.
A 34-year-old Harare resident has been charged in connection with the death of his former wife, in a case prosecutors say is tied to unpaid child maintenance.
The accused, Brian Chanachimwe, appeared before a magistrates’ court in Harare, Zimbabwe, where the state alleged that he worked with his current wife, Olipa Chide, and another suspect, Jonah Nekati, to kill his ex-wife, Jennifer Kalembo, aged 35.
According to the prosecution, the alleged plot was motivated by Chanachimwe’s attempt to avoid paying US$2,500 in child maintenance arrears for their three children.
Presenting the case, prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu told the court that Chanachimwe allegedly lured Kalembo from her home on January 12, claiming he wanted to give her US$150 for the children’s school expenses.
The court was informed that the alleged attack occurred after Kalembo arrived at Chanachimwe’s residence in Pazza Crowhill, Borrowdale.
Prosecutors further claimed that the suspects attempted to cover up the incident by destroying personal items belonging to the deceased and later transporting her body to a remote area near Eyecourt, where it was abandoned.
Kalembo’s body was discovered the next day, January 13, by a passerby, identified in court as Samson Bhobho.
During Chanachimwe’s court appearance, the case took another turn following reports that Olipa Chide died after police began searching for her. The third suspect, Jonah Nekati, is still at large.
Chanachimwe is expected to return to court on February 4, while the magistrate noted that any bail application must be made before the High Court.
