A Nigerian national has been shot dead at the Toronto GO Bus Terminal, marking Toronto’s first homicide of 2026, Canadian police have confirmed.
The victim, identified as Osemwengie Irorere, 46, was killed on Sunday evening, January 4, at the crowded transit hub near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road.
According to the Toronto Police Service, the incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. after both the victim and the suspect boarded a GO bus at the terminal.
Police said the suspect suddenly opened fire inside the bus, hitting Irorere before fleeing the scene on foot.
Emergency responders rushed to the location, but despite efforts to save him, the Nigerian man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A short time after the shooting, police tracked down and arrested the suspect, recovering a firearm during the operation.
The suspect was identified as Tyrel Gibson, a 40-year-old Toronto resident, who has been charged with First Degree Murder.
He was scheduled to appear before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, January 5, 2026.
In an official update issued on Wednesday, January 7, Toronto Police formally confirmed the identity of the deceased as Osemwengie Irorere of Nigeria, highlighting the international dimension of the killing.
The shooting has renewed concerns over gun violence in public transport spaces, particularly at major transit terminals like Yorkdale, one of Toronto’s busiest commuter hubs.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
