Armed bandits attack Borgu LGA in Niger State leaving six dead and police station burnt

At least six people have been killed after armed bandits attacked communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The coordinated assault affected Tungan-Makeri and Konkoso districts, leaving residents shaken and properties destroyed.

The violence reportedly began around 8:00 p.m. on Friday when more than 200 armed men stormed Tungan-Makeri.

Witnesses said the attackers fired shots indiscriminately and set several houses ablaze.

By the time the gunmen withdrew, six people had lost their lives and many families had fled their homes.

Residents said the attackers operated for several hours without resistance.

An eyewitness from nearby Zagatina village described a large convoy of motorcycles transporting the assailants.

He said he counted about 41 motorcycles, each carrying two or three riders. Some of the bikes reportedly had women and children among the group.

Fearing for his safety, the resident said he hid in the bush as the convoy passed behind his house.

After the initial assault, the gunmen reportedly moved into Konkoso on Wednesday morning.

During the incursion, a police station in the town was set on fire.

Residents said there was no visible security presence at the time of the attack, raising concerns about response capacity in the area.

Tungan-Makeri and Konkoso are considered major towns within Borgu LGA, making the attack particularly alarming.

Some residents reported sighting an Air Force aircraft around Tungan-Makeri after the first attack.

They believe the aerial presence may have forced the gunmen to retreat from the village.

As of the time this report was filed, the Niger State Police Command had not issued an official statement confirming the incident.

The latest violence has renewed fears over growing insecurity in parts of Borgu LGA.

Community members are calling for urgent security reinforcement to prevent further attacks and restore calm to the affected towns.
