Britney Spears music catalogue deal signals another major rights sale as the pop star partners with publisher Primary Wave.
Pop icon Britney Spears has sold the rights to her music catalogue to independent publisher Primary Wave, according to reports confirmed by a source familiar with the agreement.
The development was first reported by entertainment outlet TMZ, which cited legal documents indicating that the agreement was signed on December 30. While the exact value was not disclosed, sources suggested the deal could be close to the scale of Justin Bieber’s reported $200 million catalogue sale in 2023.
Primary Wave, known for managing the works of legendary artists such as Whitney Houston, Prince and Stevie Nicks, has not publicly commented on the transaction. Spears has also not issued a statement.
Spears, 44, remains one of the most successful pop performers of her generation. She rose to global fame in 1998 with the hit single "…Baby One More Time" and went on to produce chart-topping songs including "Toxic," "Circus," "Gimme More," and "I’m a Slave 4 U." Her most recent studio album, Glory, was released in 2016.
The reported deal adds Spears to a growing list of major musicians who have sold the rights to their work in recent years. Artists such as Sting, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake have all entered similar agreements, reflecting the rising value of music publishing rights in the global market.
Spears’ career has also drawn public attention beyond music. In 2021, she was released from a 13-year court-ordered conservatorship that had controlled both her personal and financial affairs since 2008. The arrangement was formally terminated in November of that year, marking a turning point in her life and career.
Industry observers say catalogue sales have become increasingly common as artists look to secure long-term financial stability while publishers seek to invest in established global hits.
