Why Power Supply is Down Across Southeast Nigeria – EEDC

EEDC officials explaining the gas supply shortage causing power outages in Southeast Nigeria.

Residents in Southeast Nigeria are facing a major power outage as gas shortages hit electricity generation stations.

If you have noticed a dip in electricity lately, you are not alone. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has confirmed that a drop in gas supply to thermal power stations is the reason behind the current blackout hitting the Southeast region.

According to Emeka Ezeh, the EEDC’s Head of Communications, the shortage of gas has led to a significant cut in the amount of electricity allocated to the company.

Simply put, there isn't enough power being generated to go around right now.

To prevent the entire national grid from crashing, the Independent System Operator (ISO) has been forced to implement "load shedding."

This means the available power is being managed carefully to keep the system stable, which unfortunately results in outages for many customers.

The EEDC says it is not folding its arms. The company is currently talking with gas suppliers and other key players in the power sector to resolve these constraints and get the turbines spinning at full capacity again.

While the situation is frustrating, the electricity company has appealed to its customers for patience.

They expressed regret over the inconvenience the darkness has caused and assured the public that they are doing everything possible to restore normal supply soon.
