Iyabo Obasanjo Joins APC, Declares Ogun Governorship Bid

Iyabo Obasanjo joins APC, eyeing the Ogun governorship as she returns to Nigerian politics after a 15-year break.

Iyabo Obasanjo officially joining APC for Ogun State governorship race.

The political landscape in Ogun State is buzzing as Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, officially returns to the scene.

After a 15-year break spent in the United States, the former Senator has confirmed she is joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But she isn’t just coming back to participate; she is coming to lead. During a recent interview on Eagle7 Sports FM, she made it clear that her heart is set on the Governor's office at Oke-Mosan.

Senator Iyabo, who represented Ogun Central between 2007 and 2011, stated that she has no interest in returning to the National Assembly.

She also ruled out taking any appointment as a state commissioner, noting that such roles are behind her.

According to her, this comeback wasn't a snap decision. She revealed that a dedicated group of supporters spent two years mobilizing and convincing her that she is the best fit for the state's top job.

Her transition to the APC is already official. She completed her e-registration at Ibogun Ward 11 in Ifo Local Government Area. This move was confirmed by her close political ally, Hon. Biodun Ajayi.

Meanwhile, her former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reacted calmly. In a short statement, the Ogun State chapter simply wished her well in her new political journey with the ruling party.

Analysts believe her entry will change the game for the 2027 elections. With her family name, academic background, and previous experience as a Health Commissioner, Iyabo Obasanjo is expected to be a major force in the APC.
