Police Arrest Blogger Maureen Badejo Over Clerics' Petitions

Maureen Badejo GIOTV blogger arrested by Nigeria Police in Lagos over cybercrime allegations.

Officers from the Nigeria Police Force have arrested UK-based blogger Maureen Badejo in Lagos.

The host of GIOTV was picked up on Friday by officers attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Sources say she is currently being grilled at the Cybercrime Unit in the Adekunle area of Yaba. Her arrest reportedly follows separate petitions filed against her by two prominent ministers: Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries and Dr. Daniel Olukoya of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM).

While the police have not released a formal statement, the investigation is believed to be linked to her social media posts and various online reports involving the two clergymen.

This arrest is the latest chapter in a long-running legal battle between Badejo and Apostle Suleman. In 2022, a UK High Court ordered Suleman to pay the blogger £19,601 after a defamation suit he filed against her hit a brick wall.

By August 2023, reports surfaced that Badejo had rejected an offer from the cleric to pay the debt in monthly installments of £500.

Her platform has frequently been used by critics and former church members to air grievances against the clerics.

The petition from Dr. Olukoya likely stems from Badejo’s interviews with former MFM members. One notable case involves Pastor Sunday Olowoyeye, who recently sued Olukoya for N1 billion, alleging illegal detention.

Olowoyeye claimed he was detained for 16 days after sharing his personal frustrations with the church through Badejo’s platform.

As of Friday night, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for comment. Badejo remains in custody as investigations continue.
