The peace of the Ratatis community in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State was shattered on Sunday night as gunmen launched a deadly assault, leaving seven people dead.

The attackers, suspected to be armed bandits, reportedly stormed the village in the Dorowa Babuje district around 7:30 pm. Eyewitnesses say the invaders began shooting sporadically, catching many residents off guard.

Aside from the lives lost, three other persons sustained critical injuries and are currently fighting for their lives in a local hospital.

The gunmen did not stop at the killings; they also set several houses and farmlands on fire, destroying the livelihoods of many families.

A local resident, Albert Dung, described the scene as a nightmare. He revealed that the community had actually received a tip-off about an impending invasion earlier that day.

According to Dung, distress calls were made to the Barkin Ladi Sector Command of "Operation Enduring Peace" (OPEP).

However, he claimed that these calls were ignored, allowing the attackers to operate freely for hours without any intervention from security forces.

Reacting to the incident, the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM) condemned the killing of its members. The group's National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, urged security agencies to be more proactive in protecting rural dwellers who are increasingly becoming targets for such violence.

As the community begins the painful task of burying their dead, there is a growing sense of frustration over the perceived failure of the security architecture in the region.
