Senate confirms Justice Joseph Oyewole as Supreme Court Justice in Nigeria

The Senate has confirmed Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, as a new Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The confirmation was completed on Tuesday, February 3, after lawmakers reviewed and adopted a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

The committee’s report was presented by its chairman, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, who represents Ondo Central under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While presenting the findings, Adegbonmire formally moved that the Senate consider and approve Justice Oyewole’s nomination to the nation’s highest court. The chamber subsequently adopted the recommendation without opposition.

Justice Oyewole’s confirmation followed a formal request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who wrote to the Senate seeking legislative approval for the appointment.

The President’s letter was read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in line with constitutional requirements.

In the letter, Tinubu cited Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates Senate confirmation for Supreme Court appointments. He urged lawmakers to consider the nomination promptly.

After the letter was read, Akpabio referred the nomination to the judiciary committee for screening and verification.

The committee was instructed to conclude its work quickly and report back to the chamber. That process ended with the Senate’s final approval of Justice Oyewole’s elevation to the Supreme Court.

The confirmation now clears the way for Justice Oyewole to formally assume duties at Nigeria’s apex court.
