Political violence erupted in Oyo State as PDP factions clashed during local government congresses, leaving several people injured.
Political tension boiled over in Oyo State on Saturday as violence disrupted the local government congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party. The crisis has left at least 25 people injured and properties destroyed.
The clash stems from the deep-seated rift within the party. There are currently two factions in the state: one loyal to Governor Seyi Makinde and the other backing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The violence erupted when the Wike-led faction conducted its own congress exercise.
It was a chaotic scene in several local government areas. Affected areas include Ibadan North, Ido, Ibarapa Central, Akinyele, and Ogbomoso North.
Thugs went on the rampage, attacking residents and vandalizing homes and vehicles.
One of the high-profile attacks targeted the Bodija residence of a former deputy governor, Barrister Hazim Gbolarumi. Valuable properties worth millions of naira were destroyed during the invasion.
Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, the chairman of the Wike faction in Oyo, confirmed the attacks.
He alleged that hoodlums were moving from one location to another to unleash terror on their members. He noted that over 25 vehicles were damaged in the onslaught.
The Oyo State Police Command has since reacted to the situation. The Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident. He clarified that the violence took place outside the designated congress venues.
The Commissioner of Police has reportedly ordered the immediate arrest of the hoodlums. Police authorities have assured the public that they are on top of the situation to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
