YOREM questions Sunday Igboho's loyalty to the Yoruba Nation struggle following his surprising defection to the ruling APC.
A major storm is brewing within the Yoruba self-determination movement. The Yoruba Revolutionary Movement, known as YOREM, has openly criticized prominent activist Sunday Adeyemo, widely called Sunday Igboho. This comes after his sudden decision to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a strongly worded statement, YOREM questioned the true meaning of his defection. The group asked whether this political shift should be seen as deception or outright betrayal of the cause.
Signed by its leaders, Mekunnu Koya and Wale Balogun, the statement noted that Igboho’s move has sent shockwaves through the community.
Many followers who once backed his populist rhetoric are now confused. However, YOREM argues that those who understand the history of the struggle should not be surprised.
The group stated that liberation efforts should never revolve around a single person.
They warned that movements built on hero worship are fragile and prone to collapse. The struggle for an Oodua Republic is a historical process that predates Igboho. YOREM emphasized that the fight for dignity and autonomy will continue long after him.
The statement also addressed the issue of personality cults. It pointed out that some supporters elevated Igboho to a messianic status, hailing him as a deity.
This narrative, they said, pushed aside veterans like Gani Adams and Banji Akintoye who had labored for decades.
YOREM concluded by reaffirming their commitment to the goal. They insisted that the destiny of the Yoruba people cannot be outsourced to politicians. The demand for a self-governing Oodua Republic remains non-negotiable.
