Renowned Nigerian AI strategist Chinasa T. Okolo joins the World Bank to tackle global poverty through advanced data and policy research.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Nigerian computer scientist and policy strategist, Dr. Chinasa T. Okolo, has secured a prestigious seat at the global table. She was recently announced as a 2026 World Bank Group Africa Fellow, a role that embeds her within the Bank’s high-impact Development Economics Research Group.

Operating from the Poverty, Inequality, and Human Development unit, Okolo is transitioning from the abstract world of high-tech research to the practicalities of global development. Her current mandate involves contributing to the upcoming World Development Report. 

In this capacity, she is crafting artificial intelligence models specifically designed to address structural socio-economic challenges within low- and middle-income nations.

The appointment marks a significant shift for the Cornell-trained scholar. While her previous stints at tech giants like Apple and Microsoft focused on the technical frontiers of the industry, her work now pivots toward inclusive growth and multilateralism. This fellowship highlights a growing trend of African experts leading the charge in international policy circles, moving beyond digital theory to address grassroots inequality.

Okolo’s academic and professional trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric. Holding both a master’s and a doctorate in computer science from Cornell University, she has consistently focused on AI governance and safety for marginalized communities. Her influence is already documented globally; she has featured on the TIME 100 AI list of the world’s most influential people and the inaugural Forbes 30 Under 30 AI list.

Prior to this fellowship, Okolo served as a fellow at the Brookings Institution, where she solidified her reputation as an authority on how emerging technologies intersect with public policy.

Reflecting on the new role, Okolo noted that the experience has already broadened her technical horizons. She expressed a deep commitment to leveraging her background to navigate the complexities of international development.
