Afrobeats star Davido announces a career shift, focusing on authentic African sounds rather than pursuing Western awards.
Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has declared a significant shift in his music journey.
The singer recently stated he is no longer actively pursuing Grammy awards or seeking validation from Western audiences.
Speaking on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show with Eddie Kadi, Davido explained that after achieving major global milestones, his focus has changed.
“This part of my career, I have performed everywhere, sold out every arena, and I have been to three Grammys in the last three years,” he said, reflecting on his accomplishments
The artist feels fulfilled with these international recognitions. He believes the next phase of his music will be a return to his roots. “The music that is coming next is very Davido, it is very African.
We have done it so I am not really looking to really do western sounds,” he stated clearly
This change in direction is not about stepping back, but stepping deeper into his identity. Davido emphasized that his upcoming sound will prioritize African authenticity over attempts to tailor music for Western markets
He also highlighted the strong connection he has with fans across the continent, particularly in South Africa. He noted his widespread recognition there and pointed to his collaborations with South African artists and multiple music certifications as proof of his continental influence
For Davido, the focus now is on making music that is true to his heritage. His decision underscores a growing trend where African artists prioritize their cultural identity, confident that authentic African sounds have undeniable global appeal
