Ten lives were lost in a fatal Niger State road accident on Monday, caused by speeding and illegal loading.
Tragedy struck on Monday morning along the Tafa axis of Niger State, following a fatal road traffic crash that claimed ten lives.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, noting that twenty other individuals sustained varying degrees of injury.
The crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. on the Tafa–Gujeni route, specifically at Malam Tanko. According to a statement signed by the Acting Corps Public Education Officer, Mrs. Felicia Kalu, the incident involved a DAF tanker with registration number FKY136XD.
Investigations by the Corps reveal that the tanker was carrying 33 male occupants at the time of the accident. The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, attributed the crash to excessive speed, which caused the driver to lose control.
He also highlighted a critical violation, noting that the vehicle was engaged in illegal mixed loading, carrying both goods and passengers.
Emergency operatives from the RS7.26A Tafa outpost responded promptly to the scene. They successfully rescued 23 victims alive and cleared the obstruction to restore normal traffic flow.
The injured victims were immediately transported to Umar Musa General Hospital in Sabon Wuse for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in the mortuary.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, the Corps Marshal described the crash as avoidable and a painful reminder of the consequences of traffic violations.
He urged motorists to desist from using vehicles unsuitable for passenger transport and to strictly adhere to speed limits to prevent further loss of lives on the highways.
