A bench warrant was signed by Justice Kekemeke for the arrest of Kabiru Turaki following the politician's failure to appear in a police-led case.
ABUJA — A court has issued for the arrest of the factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.
The order was handed down by Justice U.P. Kekemeke on Monday. This development followed the persistent failure of the defendant to appear before the court to answer to criminal charges. The litigation was initiated by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
It was held by the presiding judge that no valid justification was provided for the defendant’s absence. Legal proceedings had been stalled by this non-appearance.
Consequently, the coercive power of the court was invoked to ensure the presence of the PDP chieftain at the next adjourned date.
A one-count charge was filed against Turaki by the IGP. The allegations center on the provision of false information to the police. This supposedly occurred in a formal petition authored by the suspect and dated October 2022.
The integrity of police investigations is a matter of significant public interest. Allegations of misleading the authorities are viewed with gravity by the judiciary.
The case has been adjourned pending the execution of the arrest warrant by security agencies.
