The Nigeria Police Force dissolves tactical units nationwide as IGP Disu orders a major restructuring to improve operations and discipline.
A major shake-up is currently rocking the Nigeria Police Force. Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has ordered the immediate dissolution of tactical squads operating across state commands.
The directive came after a virtual meeting with senior officers. Squads such as Lion, Tiger, and Scorpion have been scrapped with immediate effect. The IGP mandated that personnel from these units return to conventional policing duties.
Officers are now being redeployed to handle patrol duties, guard assignments, and divisional crime management. The police leadership stated that new operational structures will be unveiled soon.
While the official reason focuses on restructuring, the move follows years of public outcry over the conduct of these units. Many citizens have accused tactical squads of extortion and rights violations.
Interestingly, sources reveal that not all units were affected. Squads like the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Anti-Kidnapping unit reportedly remain active.
This reform comes shortly after the IGP addressed issues regarding stalled promotions. The current administration is making efforts to correct past injustices linked to bribery allegations under the former leadership.
Further details about the new police structure are expected during the officers’ conference scheduled for March 26.
