Nigeria, UK Strengthen Ties With Three MoUs

Nigeria and the UK seal three landmark agreements to enhance migration safety and boost economic ties between both nations.

Nigerian and UK officials shake hands after signing bilateral agreements on migration and trade in London.

The Federal Government has solidified its diplomatic relationship with the United Kingdom by signing three major Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

These agreements are designed to tackle irregular migration, improve border security, and expand business opportunities for companies operating in both countries.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, signed the documents in the UK on behalf of the Nigerian government.

He described the move as a clear reflection of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to a transparent migration system that prioritizes national interests.

A key component of the new deal focuses on organized immigration crime. Both nations have agreed on a three-year strategic plan to dismantle criminal networks profiting from illegal migration. This framework aims to ensure that movement between the two countries remains safe and orderly.

Beyond security, the partnership opens new doors for the economy. A specific statement of intent was signed to expand business visas for UK firms operating in Nigeria

Tunji-Ojo noted that this aligns with the President’s "bold reforms" to build a trillion-dollar economy by removing trade barriers.

"For us, this is what we have been looking forward to," the Minister said. He assured stakeholders that the government would swing into action to ensure these agreements deliver tangible results.

The UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, lauded the development. She ranked Nigeria as "number one" in successful bilateral relations, acknowledging the country as the first to secure such an extensive agreement with the UK.

The new business visa scheme will now allow credible UK-domiciled firms easier access to the Nigerian market, mirroring the enhanced processes already available to trusted Nigerian businesses.
