Abbas Olalekan, a Local Government Inspector with the National Youth Service Corps in Ogun State, has been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta. He faces serious allegations of conspiracy and the unlawful attempt to procure an abortion.

The arraignment follows the tragic death of a serving corps member identified as Ariyo. The young woman reportedly passed away two weeks ago due to complications arising from a pregnancy.

During the court session on Monday, the prosecution painted a grim picture of the events. Police Prosecutor Insp. Lawrence Olu-Balogun informed the court that the defendant engaged in a romantic affair with the deceased. He alleged that when the relationship resulted in a pregnancy, Olalekan conspired with others to terminate it.

The court heard that the inspector supplied drugs to the deceased in an attempt to abort the pregnancy. Unfortunately, the prosecutor stated that the administration of these drugs led to the corps member's death. The offences are said to contravene the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State.

Olalekan, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel, Mrs. Bunmi Adelabu, urged the court to grant bail in liberal terms. She argued that the charges did not explicitly hold her client responsible for the deceased's death.

Presiding Magistrate Mrs. A.K. Araba granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000. The bail conditions require two sureties. One must be a blood relative, and the other must be gainfully employed. They must also provide evidence of tax payment and utility bills.

Until the bail conditions are perfected, the magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned until April 14 for further proceedings.
