Enugu Police Apprehend Suspect Over Rape of Pregnant Victim

A 24-year-old suspect is in custody following a brutal assault on a pregnant woman in Enugu. Police recovered a cutlass and blood-stained clothing.

The arrest of a 24-year-old male, identified as Ugwu Desmond, has been effected by the Enugu State Police Command. The suspect was apprehended in connection with the alleged rape and attempted murder of a pregnant woman in the Affa community, located within the Udi Local Government Area.

The incident was confirmed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe. According to official reports, the 30-year-old victim was accosted on the night of March 14, 2026. She was returning from a neighbour’s residence in Amokwo-Affa when she was trailed along a secluded track road.

A sudden attack was launched from behind. The suspect was armed with a cutlass. The victim was forced to the ground and an attempt at strangulation was made to prevent her from raising an alarm. She was subsequently dragged into an uncompleted building. Threats to her life were issued before she was sexually assaulted.

The harrowing ordeal was reported to the authorities by 6:15 a.m. the following morning. Swift intervention was mobilised by operatives of the Affa Police Division. The suspect was promptly taken into custody. Immediate medical attention was provided to the victim at a nearby hospital.

The crime scene was processed by forensic teams. Several critical exhibits were recovered, including the weapon used in the assault and clothing items bearing biological stains. A confession was reportedly made by the suspect during initial interrogations.

A full-scale investigation into the matter was directed by the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa. Assurances were given to the public that justice would be served. The suspect will be arraigned in court as soon as the administrative processes are concluded.
