US forces arrive in Nigeria with Reaper drones to boost intelligence gathering against insurgents in the northern region.
The United States has deployed MQ-9 Reaper drones and roughly 200 military personnel to Nigeria. This strategic move aims to bolster intelligence and training support for Nigerian forces tackling insurgency in the North.
According to a report by Reuters, both American and Nigerian officials confirmed the deployment. The mission is strictly limited to surveillance and advisory roles. There are no American troops involved in frontline combat, nor are they conducting drone strikes.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, confirmed that US forces are operating from an airfield in Bauchi State.
He explained that the partnership supports a newly established intelligence fusion cell. This cell provides actionable intelligence to field commanders.
The MQ-9 Reaper drones are capable of flying for over 27 hours. While they can be armed, officials stressed that the units in Nigeria are used solely for monitoring. This support is vital for identifying and tracking terrorist threats.
This deployment follows recent suicide bombings in the Northeast. Military authorities note that groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP remain active.
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to countering security threats through enhanced intelligence sharing.
