Aliko Dangote's Wealth Surges $3.2bn on Refinery Success

Aliko Dangote has seen his wealth rise by $3.21 billion in 2026, cementing his position as Africa’s richest man.

Aliko Dangote smiles as his wealth surges following the success of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has started the year with a massive financial leap. His net worth has climbed by $3.21 billion, pushing his total fortune to an impressive $33.2 billion. This growth places him among the top performers on the continent for 2026.

The latest data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index reveals that Dangote is now the 64th richest person in the world. He has moved up 13 places on the global list. While South Africa’s Natie Kirsh and Nigeria’s Abdulsamad Rabiu also recorded significant gains, Dangote maintains a comfortable lead at the top of the African chart.

The primary driver of this wealth explosion is the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Located in Lagos, the facility has transformed Nigeria's energy status. For the first time in decades, the country has become a net exporter of petrol. In March 2026 alone, the refinery exported about 44,000 barrels of petrol daily.

The refinery, valued at $20 billion, is not just serving Nigeria. It has already shipped nearly half a million tonnes of refined products to five other African nations. This operational success is reshaping the region's energy landscape and boosting Dangote's industrial value significantly.

The business mogul is not slowing down. Plans are underway for an $11.5 billion project to produce detergent ingredients. Additionally, his group has started a $2.5 billion urea fertiliser plant in Ethiopia. This project aims to revolutionize agriculture in East Africa.

Dangote currently sits comfortably ahead of his closest rivals, including Johann Rupert and Nicky Oppenheimer. With a gap of about $14 billion between him and the second spot, his position as Africa’s wealthiest individual remains unshaken for now.
