FG Moves to Halt Airline Shutdown Over Fuel Hike

Minister Festus Keyamo addressing the press on the aviation fuel crisis and airline shutdown threat.

The Federal Government has stepped in to prevent a total collapse of the aviation sector. An emergency stakeholders' meeting has been scheduled for April 22, 2026, to address the growing crisis threatening to ground flights across the country.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, confirmed this intervention in an official letter dated April 16, 2026. This move comes as a direct response to the ultimatum issued by airline operators, who threatened to shut down operations due to the unbearable cost of aviation fuel.

The crux of the matter is the staggering 300 percent increase in the price of JetA1. The fuel cost has skyrocketed from N900 to over N3,000 per litre, leaving carriers with no choice but to consider a service shutdown or a massive hike in airfares.

In his address to the operators, Keyamo assured them that their grievances have caught the full attention of the presidency. He promised that the government is ready to take immediate steps to stabilize the situation.

The upcoming meeting in Abuja will bring together all relevant regulatory authorities and industry players. The primary objective is to find a practical and sustainable solution that keeps the planes flying without compromising the survival of the airlines.

Travelers and industry stakeholders are now watching closely, hoping that this high-level dialogue will bring relief to the sector before the situation escalates further.
