Ibori-Oborevwori Peace Pact Clears Path For Ibori-Suenu

The Ibori-Oborevwori peace accord reshapes Delta politics, clearing the path for Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu's 2027 return.

Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The coast is now clear for the daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori to return to the House of Representatives for a second term.

This follows a major political shift in the state. Her father, widely known as the 'Ogidigboigbo', has successfully cleared the path that was previously blocked by political rivals.

The good news for the federal lawmaker was confirmed by Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe. He is the Director General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications.

In a press release titled "Oborevwori–Ibori Peace Accord," Oghenesivbe explained how this reconciliation is completely reshaping the political architecture of Delta State.

The truce between Ibori and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has dissolved the bitter divisions left behind by the 2023 general elections. It has brought Ethiope East and Ethiope West Local Government Areas under a common political understanding within the All Progressives Congress.

Stakeholders in Ethiope East recently held a crucial unity caucus meeting at the residence of the State Director of Protocol, Okakuro Sunday Onoriode, in Oria, Abraka.

At the meeting, party leaders unanimously backed Ibori-Suenu for a second term in the House of Representatives. They also threw their weight behind the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, for re-election in 2027.

Leaders at the gathering described the new alliance as the emergence of a fresh political equilibrium in Delta State. They noted that it has significantly reduced intra-party friction and strengthened the APC's grassroots presence ahead of the 2027 polls.

This political realignment did not happen overnight. The foundation was laid in late March when Ibori paid a private visit to Governor Oborevwori at his residence in Osubi, near Warri.

That closed-door meeting was held away from the media and political aides, keeping supporters guessing about its significance.

Before now, the relationship between the two heavyweights was far from warm. During the 2023 elections, Ibori reportedly backed Oborevwori's main rival, Olorogun David Edevbie, for the governorship ticket.

Oborevwori won the ticket and eventually claimed the governorship seat. Even after the governor defected to the APC in 2025, the lingering tension remained.

The friction previously took a toll on Ibori-Suenu's political journey. There were alleged moves by the powers-that-be to stop her second-term ambition because of the animosity with her father.

This tension boiled over two months ago during the APC Ethiope West congress, which turned violent. Ibori-Suenu claimed she was locked out of the venue and narrowly escaped harm.

Despite the chaos, she displayed remarkable restraint. She passionately appealed to her supporters not to retaliate, effectively stopping the situation from escalating into a wider crisis.

Now, with the peace accord firmly in place, the political landscape has shifted dramatically. The alliance between Ibori and Oborevwori is expected to bring greater unity and cohesion to Delta State as the race for 2027 begins to take shape.
