The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, clashes with Alex Onyia after he criticized the school's facilities during a scheduled guest lecture.
The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has expressed strong displeasure with education councillor, Alex Onyia, following his recent comments on the state of the institution's infrastructure.
The university accuses him of acting with an ulterior motive rather than the spirit of mentorship he was invited for.
In a statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Agha Egwu Inya, the institution alleged that Onyia deviated from the purpose of his visit.
He was invited to deliver the Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture but reportedly arrived with a television crew to document dilapidated structures at the Eni-Njoku hostel.
The university described this conduct as embarrassing and unfair. Management clarified that contracts for the renovation of those hostels had already been awarded before Onyia’s visit. They argued that he likely knew about these steps but chose to focus on the negatives.
UNN further contested Onyia’s claims regarding a visually impaired student’s hostel. The statement noted that independent groups, including the National Association of Nigerian Students, had previously disputed that narrative.
The university questioned the credibility of Onyia’s intentions, contrasting his actions with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s recent supportive visit to the campus.
