Mackenzie Naught, a first-grade teacher, faces serious criminal charges after confessing to an illicit relationship with a minor student.
A 25-year-old first-grade teacher in Washington State is facing serious legal trouble after confessing to her husband about an illicit affair with a student.
Mackenzie Naught, an educator at St. John Elementary School, reportedly admitted to the relationship just hours before law enforcement officials arrested her on Sunday.
According to court documents obtained by the Spokesman-Review, the encounter with the 16-year-old boy occurred the previous week.
The details emerging from the investigation are quite disturbing. Naught allegedly arranged a secret meeting with the teenager in the dead of night. Court papers reveal that she initiated the contact by sending flirty messages on Snapchat while her husband was asleep.
The student, who attends a nearby high school, was initially hesitant about the meetup. However, he eventually agreed and picked the teacher up near her home at approximately 2:15 a.m.
Reports state that Naught directed the boy to park his truck at a secluded spot. It was there that the alleged sexual encounter took place. The teacher reportedly warned the minor not to disclose their activities to anyone for fear of exposure.
The situation took a dramatic turn when Naught’s husband, whom she had been married to for four years, alerted the authorities. He told police that the student also confessed to the sexual act during a conversation.
When officers first questioned Naught, she denied the allegations despite her earlier admission to her husband. She has since been placed on administrative leave by the school district, a move coming just eight months into her teaching tenure.
On Monday, Naught appeared before the Whitman County Superior Court. She was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.
The school administration has released a statement emphasizing their commitment to student safety and well-being during this difficult time.
Her arraignment is scheduled for Friday, May 15. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter.
