Abia Bans Okada in Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia from June 22 2026

Commercial motorcycle operators in Abia State as government announces okada ban in Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia from June 22 2026

Abia State will stop commercial motorcycles from plying key urban routes starting next week.

The state government confirmed on Saturday that all okada operations will be prohibited across the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. Governor Alex Otti gave the approval after a review of security and traffic concerns in the cities.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, signed the press release announcing the decision. He said the ban takes effect Monday, June 22, 2026.

Officials explained that the move is not targeted at riders alone. The government said it wants to strengthen security, reduce road accidents, ease traffic gridlock, and bring order to transport operations in busy city centers.

Riders and transport unions have been told to halt services within the affected areas before the deadline. Security agencies and enforcement teams will monitor compliance across Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.

The government warned that violations will attract penalties. Any motorcycle caught operating illegally will be seized, and the rider will face arrest under state law.

Residents and community leaders are also being called to support the enforcement process. Officials described the ban as part of a broader plan to make Abia’s urban areas safer and more livable for commuters and businesses.

The directive adds Abia to the list of Nigerian states reviewing okada operations to balance mobility needs with public safety concerns.
