Nnamdi Kanu sacks IPOB DOS leadership, names Chris Nwaogu head of 4th administration over welfare of detained Biafrans.
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has dissolved the movement's third Directorate of State and immediately set up a new leadership team.
In a statement released on Tuesday from Germany, Kanu announced the end of the administration led by Chika Edoziem and the inauguration of a fourth Directorate of State.
He named Mazi Chris Nwaogu, a US-based member of the movement, as the new Head of the Directorate.
Kanu said Nwaogu will take charge of the day-to-day running of IPOB affairs with immediate effect. He will work with his team under the direct authority of the IPOB leader.
Why the change was made
According to the statement, the decision followed a detailed review of the performance of the outgoing team. Kanu said the third administration failed in its core responsibilities at a critical time for the Biafra agitation.
He listed two major reasons for the dissolution.
First, the neglect of detained Biafrans. Kanu said hundreds of IPOB members have remained in detention across Nigeria, with many held for years without trial at the Wawa Military Barracks in Niger State.
He noted that some detainees died in custody, while others endured harsh conditions that required urgent intervention from the movement's leadership. He described the failure to prioritize their welfare and legal defence as a serious dereliction of duty.
Second, misplaced priorities. The IPOB leader said the outgoing DOS spent too much time on internal disputes, personal rivalries and factional arguments.
He stated that energy and resources that should have gone into diplomacy, legal advocacy, prisoner welfare and strategic planning were wasted on distractions.
"The struggle for Biafra demands discipline, focus and sacrifice," the statement read.
Brief history of the DOS
The Directorate of State was created by Nnamdi Kanu in 2012 as the administrative arm of IPOB.
Since then, it has been led by three previous heads:
• Dr Justin Akujieze (USA) — Head of the 1st Administration
• Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu (Spain) — Head of the 2nd Administration
• Chika Edoziem (Sweden) — Head of the 3rd Administration, appointed in March 2017 while Kanu was detained at Kuje Prison in Abuja
With the June 17 announcement, the Edoziem-led team is now formally dissolved.
What happens next
Kanu said the new DOS under Chris Nwaogu has a clear mandate. It is to protect the movement, defend its members, support families of victims, and drive the Biafra restoration project with strategic clarity.
IPOB sources told Obgist that the new head is expected to reorganize the central coordination units and reopen direct engagement on prisoner cases.
The development marks the most significant leadership change inside IPOB since 2017, and it comes at a time when the group is pushing for renewed international attention on its campaign.
