Brazil hiker dies in 100ft fall applying bug spray at Maricá, a day after fatal bungee plunge in São Paulo.
A Sunday hike in Maricá, Rio de Janeiro, ended in horror after a 59-year-old woman slipped off a cliff while stopping to apply insect repellent.
The victim was Rosemary Suzart Garcia, a Rio resident described as an experienced hiker. She was with a large group visiting the Grutas do Spar when she stepped onto a short path near an overlook on Sunday.
How it happened
Witnesses told Brazil's Globo that Garcia lost her balance as she lifted her leg to rub the spray on. It happened in seconds.
Giovani Maximino, who was there, said the hiking guide lunged for Garcia's arm as she tipped over — but was nearly pulled off himself. The guide only managed to grab onto a "root in the area".
Maximino said Garcia was wearing protective gear, including a helmet and gloves, but the drop was too fast to stop. The fall was estimated at 25-30 metres, about 98 to 100 feet, and she was part of a group of about 15 visitors.
Firefighters were called to the cliff at Spar Caves. By the time they arrived, Garcia had already died at the scene.
Local authorities in Maricá say the incident remains under investigation.
Second death in two days
Garcia's fall came just a day after another fatal outdoor accident in São Paulo state.
On Saturday, June 13, 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell about 130 feet during a rope-jumping event at the Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge) in Limeira.
Video from the scene showed staff escorting her to the edge while the rope remained unused on the platform. She was pushed off without the bungee cord attached to her harness.
Six people linked to the event were arrested, and three organisers have been charged with homicide with implied malice.
Police identified them as Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, who were charged with homicide with eventual intent following the death
