Jury orders Chris Brown to pay $13m to ex-housekeeper Maria Avila mauled by his dog Hades in 2020 California attack.
Chris Brown is about to part with a lot of money and it's not for a new album.
A California jury has ordered the R&B star to pay nearly $13 million in damages to his former housekeeper after a brutal dog attack at his home in 2020.
The case centered on Maria Avila, who said she was mauled by Hades, a 200-pound Caucasian shepherd, while taking out the trash at Brown's Tarzana property. The Los Angeles jury ruled in her favour after a two-week trial, finding Brown liable for negligence.
The numbers are steep. On Tuesday, June 30, jurors awarded Avila $12.9 million for her injuries. Her sister, Patricia Avila, who also worked at the house, got $885,000 for emotional distress. Maria's husband, Oscar Olivo, was awarded $50,000.
Avila told the court the 2020 attack left her permanently disfigured, with deep facial scars, vision loss and nerve damage that required multiple surgeries. She described how the dog lunged without warning as she worked outside.
Brown's team did not deny the attack happened, but argued over who owned the dog and how much responsibility the singer bore. During proceedings, it emerged the Caucasian shepherd was kept as part of his home security setup.
Lawyers for the Avila family welcomed the verdict, calling it justice after a legal battle that began when the lawsuit was filed in 2021. They said the award reflects the lifelong impact of the injuries.
The ruling comes as Brown continues touring, but for Maria Avila, the focus is recovery. After five years in court, a jury has finally put a price on the night a routine chore turned into a life-changing mauling.
