Many Nigerians still call it the American visiting visa. Officially, it is the US B1/B2 nonimmigrant visa, and it remains the most common route for short trips to the United States.
If you are planning to apply, you need to understand what it actually allows you to do. The US Embassy has been very clear about this lately.
What exactly is the B1/B2 visa?
It is a temporary, nonimmigrant visa. It does not give you the right to live or work in America. It is meant for short, occasional visits only.
In most cases, Nigerians are issued a combined B1/B2 visa. That means you can use one visa for both business and pleasure. The visa itself allows its holder to visit the United States for tourism, business or medical treatment purposes.
What the B1 part covers
The B1 is for business. According to immigration guidance, Nigerians entering briefly on this category do so for business, while B2 is for pleasure or medical care.
You can use the B1 for consulting with business partners, attending scientific, educational or professional conferences, settling an estate, negotiating contracts and attending business meetings.
You cannot use it to run a business from inside the US or to take up employment where a US source pays you.
What the B2 part covers
The B2 is where most applicants fall in. It is for tourism, vacation, visiting family and friends, and getting medical treatment.
The US Embassy in Nigeria recently listed it simply. Here is what you CAN use your B1/B2 visa for: business meetings, visiting family, tourism.
It also covers social events, concerts, and short medical visits. For parents, it is often the visa used when going for childbirth related medical care, with proper documentation.
What you cannot do with it
This is where many people get into trouble.
You cannot work, you cannot school full time, and you cannot use frequent long stays to live in America. Officers watch for patterns. If they think you are trying to live in the US through frequent or extended visits, they may suspect misuse.
The Embassy has warned that improper use can result in permanent ineligibility for a visa in the future.
Big change for Nigerians on validity
This is very important if you are applying now.
Before, Nigerians enjoyed up to 5 years multiple entry B1/B2 visas. Under the new reciprocity schedule, that has changed to 3 months single entry.
The US Embassy announced that effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period.
The good news is that all US non-immigrant visas issued before July 8, 2025 will retain their original status and validity. So if you already have a 5-year visa, you can still use it until it expires.
The US says visa reciprocity is a continuous process and subject to review at any time.
How much does it cost and what do you need?
The application fee for B1, B2 and B1/B2 remains $185. You will fill the DS-160 form online, book an interview in Abuja or Lagos, and come with strong proof of ties to Nigeria.
Consular officers want to see that you will return. That means a stable job, business, family ties, or property. Be honest and consistent. Keep your answers short and clear during the interview.
For Obgist readers planning to travel this year, understand the purpose before you apply. The B1/B2 is powerful for legitimate short visits, but it is not a work or relocation visa. Using it correctly protects your travel history for the future.
