US lifts restrictions on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5, allowing foreigners to use the advanced AI models again.
The ban is over. After nearly three weeks of confusion, Anthropic can now share its smartest AI models with the world again.
The US Commerce Department has lifted export controls on the company's two flagship systems — Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The decision was announced Tuesday on X by both Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
"We've received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5," Anthropic posted. "We'll begin restoring access tomorrow."
It ends a tense standoff that started in mid-June. The US government had ordered Anthropic to suspend all foreign access to the models, even for foreign nationals working inside the US. The reason given was national security officials feared a potential jailbreak method could let the AI be misused by foreign militaries.
Anthropic pushed back, calling the risk narrow and saying competitors had similar flaws. But to comply, the company shut down Fable 5 and Mythos 5 globally, leaving researchers, developers and even its own staff locked out.
The impact was immediate. Cybersecurity leaders from Nvidia and Adobe publicly urged Washington to reconsider, arguing the ban was hurting efforts to detect software vulnerabilities and prevent digital attacks.
Now, the Commerce Department says a license is no longer required for the export, reexport, or in-country transfer of the models. In plain terms, anyone including foreign users can use them again.
For Anthropic, the timing is critical. The startup is preparing for a major initial public offering, and the restriction had threatened to derail investor confidence. With the green light back, the company says it will restore access globally starting immediately.
Officials are not calling it a full retreat. The government says it will continue monitoring AI misuse risks and could reimpose controls if circumstances change. The White House has also invited Anthropic to collaborate on new AI safety policies.
For users, the message is simple. The world's most talked-about AI models are back online, and the US is choosing to balance national security with keeping American AI competitive.
