Goods estimated at millions of Naira have been lost.
This followed a fire outbreak at the popular Spar Mall in Calabar, Cross River State, early this morning, August 22.
The inferno affected several shops inside the shopping complex. Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the affected sections as traders and shoppers watched in panic.
The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. Authorities also say the full extent of the damage has not been confirmed.
Emergency responders were quickly mobilized to the scene. The situation was brought under control after hours of intense firefighting.
The Cross River State Government has reacted to the incident. In a statement issued in Calabar, the government described the fire as unfortunate.
According to the Commissioner, Erasmus Cobham, the state has ordered a full investigation. He said relevant emergency and safety agencies have been directed to probe the cause of the fire.
Cobham explained that the government will also provide immediate support to affected business owners and individuals.
“We have accordingly directed the relevant emergency and safety authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire, and to provide immediate support to affected businesses and individuals,” Cobham stated.
He assured residents that the government will work closely with the management of the mall. The aim is to prevent future occurrence and enforce strict safety compliance across all public facilities in the state.
The Commissioner appealed to residents to stay calm. He urged them to stay away from the mall area to allow emergency teams to work without obstruction.
He also warned against looting and vandalism. According to him, security operatives have been deployed to secure lives and property around the facility.
