A Nigerian citizen has been arrested in Vietnam over his alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking operation linked to a shipment that crossed into the country from neighbouring Laos.
Vietnamese authorities announced the arrest after customs officers intercepted a package containing suspected crystal methamphetamine and heroin at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri Province.
According to a statement released on Monday, August 17, investigators recovered about 2 kilograms of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected bricks of heroin hidden inside a shipment.
Officials said the illicit drugs had been carefully concealed in electric water heaters and electronic components, a method believed to have been used to avoid detection during border inspections.
Suspicious package flagged during border inspection
The Customs Control Team under the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX said the operation began on the night of August 5.
At about 8:30 p.m customs officers were screening vehicles entering Vietnam from Laos through the Lao Bao International Border Gate when scanning equipment detected unusual images inside a consigned package.
A detailed physical examination of the shipment later uncovered the suspected narcotics hidden within the electrical appliances.
The discovery immediately raised concerns that the shipment was part of a wider cross-border drug trafficking network.
Multi-agency investigation led to suspect's arrest
Following the discovery, customs authorities launched a coordinated investigation involving several law enforcement agencies.
The Customs Control Team worked alongside officers from the Lao Bao International Border Gate Customs Branch, Quang Tri Police's Drug Crime Investigation Division, the Anti-Smuggling Investigation Sub-Department and the provincial Border Guard to track the intended recipient of the shipment.
After several days of surveillance and tracing the package through different locations, investigators identified and located the suspect.
Nigerian suspect arrested in Ho Chi Minh City
Authorities arrested Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, a Nigerian national born in 1983, on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to investigators, he was taken into custody while allegedly receiving the package containing the suspected drugs.
Police said Odionye admitted he knew the parcel contained illegal drugs.
He allegedly told investigators that he had been hired to collect the package in Ho Chi Minh City before transporting it to Hanoi.
Investigation continues
Vietnamese authorities said investigations are still ongoing to determine whether other individuals or members of a transnational trafficking network were involved in the operation.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to identify additional suspects connected to the shipment as the investigation expands.
The case highlights the continued collaboration between customs and security agencies in tackling cross-border drug trafficking along the Laos-Vietnam border while investigations remain underway.
