A Nigerian-born teenager from Iowa has made history in the United States literary space.
Daniel Umemezie has been named the 2026-2027 US National Youth Poet Laureate. He is the 10th young poet to hold the title.
He is also the second Nigerian-American to win the prestigious honour.
A Big Moment For Nigeria
The announcement was made at a ceremony in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 25. It was curated by Urban Word after months of judging hundreds of Youth Poets Laureate from over 120 sites across the US.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria celebrated him across its social media pages. In its message, the Mission described him as a gifted Nigerian-American voice who weaves verse that captures the richness and complexity of life.
The Mission said his achievement embodies American excellence. It shows how the United States empowers talented young people to thrive and lead through creativity.
He follows in the footsteps of Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to win the title in 2023.
Who Is Daniel Umemezie?
Daniel is 18 years old. He was born in Nigeria, the son of a pastor and a nurse, and moved to Iowa as a teenager.
He just graduated from Cedar Falls High School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is the first Iowan to ever receive the national award.
According to Senator Chuck Grassley, who honoured him on the Senate floor on June 11, 2026, Daniel's high school is just 10 miles from his farm.
Grassley said, "Daniel, you’re making the state of Iowa proud."
Though he started writing poetry back in Nigeria, his career took off at Cedar Falls High. His English teacher, Michelle Rathe, gave him the push to put his work out there.
That push led him to become Iowa's Student Poet Ambassador in his junior year. He later became the inaugural Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate.
Heritage, Identity And Purpose
What makes Daniel's work stand out is how he explores his roots.
His poetry draws from his childhood in Nigeria. He writes about heritage, identity, and what it means to live between two worlds.
Speaking about his tenure, he said he wants to champion work that refuses to be easily defined. He listed multilingual poetry, diasporic poetry, poetry as political insistence, and poetry as self.
Rachel Morgan, an editor of the North American Review and founder of the Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate program, described his win as pure delight and humbleness.
"I like to believe words have a spirit in them," Daniel told the Des Moines Register. "They have the ability to invigorate people."
He is not just a poet. He plays over 10 instruments, does animation, woodworking, and sculpting. He believes art and science are two sides of the same coin.
That belief is why his next step is Iowa State University, where he will study aerospace engineering. He is already working on his first poetry collection.
