Bashir Ahmad defends Peter Obi, says he should not be blamed for 1966 coup that killed Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto.
Bashir Ahmad, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, has defended Peter Obi over the 1966 coup allegation.
Ahmad, who is a former presidential spokesperson, said Obi should not be held responsible for the events of the coup.
His reaction followed an interview Obi granted on Arise TV on Thursday.
During the interview, the anchor told Obi that some people in the North are yet to forgive the Igbo for the killing of Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, during the 1966 coup.
The anchor then asked Obi how he would respond to a voter in Sokoto who still holds the incident against the Igbo, more than 60 years after, and is now being asked to vote for him.
Obi responded that he could not be blamed for the coup. He said he was barely four years old when it happened.
Sharing a clip of the interview on his official X handle, Ahmad backed Obi's position. He said nobody should be judged for the wrongdoings of others.
According to him, Obi should not be held responsible for the 1966 coup simply because of his identity or background.
He stressed that the same principle should apply to every Nigerian, regardless of ethnicity or region.
"We must learn to judge people by their own actions, not by the actions of others," Ahmad wrote.
Ahmad's comment has continued to generate reactions online, with many describing it as a call for fairness and unity ahead of future elections.
