The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Francis Duru.
OBGist gathered that Duru, 57, died after a brief illness. His family announced his passing in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
According to information obtained by OBGist, the announcement was published on the actor's verified official Instagram page, francis.duru.
"We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness," the family said in the statement.
The family further expressed appreciation for prayers and support. "We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen," the statement added.
Findings indicate that the family did not disclose the nature of the illness and has yet to release burial arrangements.
AGN confirms exit of great thespian
The Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, has also confirmed the development. In a post shared on its official Instagram handle alongside its president, Abubakar Yakubu, the guild described Duru's death as the exit of a great thespian.
"Another great thespian gone, rest in peace, Francis Duru," the guild wrote.
OBGist understands that tributes from colleagues and industry stakeholders have continued to trail the announcement.
Tributes and public reaction
Reactions poured in across social media platforms shortly after the news broke, with many Nigerians paying tribute to his years of service to Nollywood.
On X, formerly Twitter, users described the news as shocking and painful, with several referencing his recent public appearance to debunk health rumours.
A section of the tributes recalled that Duru had only recently addressed viral videos that claimed he was critically ill. Others drew attention to the personal tragedy he suffered two years ago, noting the fragility of life. Many fans celebrated his memorable roles and said his legacy would endure in the industry he helped build.
Information available to OBGist shows the actor had in June dismissed a video circulating online which portrayed him as frail and terminally ill.
He described the clip as fabricated and malicious, and accused those behind it of deliberately misleading the public. He also condemned the misuse of artificial intelligence to manipulate images of public figures, referring to those behind such content as merchants of wickedness.
A career spanning three decades
Francis Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State. He had his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria.
He gained admission to the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
OBGist learnt that he began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. His breakthrough came in 1995 when he played Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the action-comedy produced by the late Amaka Igwe, a role that made him one of the most recognisable faces of Nollywood's early years.
He went on to feature in several productions including Ugly Bird, Mboputa, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, Blood Vessel, The Good Husband, Stigma and Mortuary Gate, among others.
Beyond acting, Duru worked as a producer, director, voice-over artist and master of ceremonies. He served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010.
In 2007, he received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award for his positive influence on young people. In 2020, he won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
Family and personal loss
Duru married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003 after they met as undergraduates at the University of Port Harcourt. The union produced four children.
In August 2024, the family suffered a devastating loss with the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, fondly called his champ and lion. The actor had publicly mourned the teenager, who would have turned 16 in December that year.
His death comes two years after that loss and marks another major exit in Nollywood, which has in recent months mourned several veteran performers.
