Democrat Chris Pappas made history on November 3 in New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the United States Senate after defeating Republican John E. Sununu.
According to the report provided to OBGist, Pappas won the race during Tuesday's November 3 midterm elections. The victory gives him the seat previously held by retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen.
Pappas addressed supporters at his election watch party and paid tribute to his family.
I want to thank the guy next to me, my amazing husband. I’m the luckiest guy because I'm married to a man that I love.
"And despite all the negative attacks and the lies, it's nice to know that love and truth prevailed tonight."
The result keeps the New Hampshire seat in Democratic hands. According to the report, the seat became open after Senator Jeanne Shaheen retired following 18 years in office.
The win maintains Democratic control of a seat the party has held through Shaheen's tenure. Chris Pappas, 46, has represented New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives since 2018. He also serves as co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus.
Verified reporting underlines the political weight of the outcome. According to The Times, the result secures a crucial seat for Democrats while making Pappas the first openly gay man elected to the chamber.
