Nathaniel Bassey Hits 1 Billion YouTube Views, First African

Nathaniel Bassey on stage leading worship during Halleluyah Challenge

Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has crossed one billion YouTube views, becoming the first African to reach the milestone over the weekend following the October edition of his Halleluyah Challenge.

Statistics displayed on his channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, show a cumulative total of 1,014,544,577 views and 5.24 million subscribers since the channel was created in 2011, according to Punch. Similar figures were recorded by analytics trackers over the weekend of November 1 to 2, 2026, with the channel listed at more than 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers.

The channel has grown on the strength of worship recordings including Imela, You Are God, Onise lyanu and the large audience built through his popular online music and prayer movement, Halleluyah Challenge. Reports noted that Nathaniel Bassey Main surpassed the historic mark over the weekend, powered by those catalogue songs and live worship sessions.

The development came after the just concluded October 5 to 30, 2026, edition of Halleluyah Challenge. The programme ran from October 5 to October 30, 2026, and the billion-view threshold was crossed shortly afterwards.

The movement was founded in 2017 and has become a consistent driver of engagement on the platform. Independent channel data listed by analytics platform Social Blade shows Nathaniel Bassey Main as created on March 4, 2011, which aligns with the 2011 creation date referenced in the channel statistics.

Hallelujah Challenge is identified as an online Christian worship and prayer programme founded by Nathaniel Bassey in 2017. According to reports, Bassey launched the initiative on June 1, 2017, following an earlier online initiative known as the Tongues Challenge. The sessions began as midnight Instagram Live broadcasts from his living room and have since expanded into month-long editions that draw participants across continents and contribute significantly to the channel's watch time.

The achievement has generated excitement on social media, especially among his followers who took to his page to congratulate him. Many fans shared celebratory posts, while gospel music pages highlighted the scale of the milestone for African gospel content on YouTube.
