Legendary musician Stevie Wonder has filed a lawsuit to evict his ex-fiancée, Carmen Efferson, from his Los Angeles home where she has lived rent-free since 1988.
The eviction suit, detailed in court documents obtained, has left Efferson stunned after nearly four decades in the property, sources close to her told the outlet.
According to TMZ, Efferson told friends that Wonder had promised the house was hers, though she never received a deed to the property. A source close to her said she was shocked by the legal action given their long history together.
Efferson is said to have made the house her home over the decades. Sources close to her said her late mother also lived in the property until her passing.
Long-term relationship and dispute over property
Wonder and Efferson had an on-again, off-again romantic relationship dating back to the 1980s, as reported. The pair were reportedly engaged in the 1980s but never married. During their time together, Wonder helped Efferson secure jobs in the music industry. Wonder later married Tomeeka Robyn Bracy in 2017.
In the court filing, Wonder stated that Efferson only paid utilities while occupying the L.A. home. He said issues arose when she allegedly refused to allow people onto the property for insurance purposes.
Another source familiar with the matter said that the dispute centres on safety and security, and the need to ensure the home can be properly insured. The source described it as not personal, but about following basic safety measures.
A review of the property online shows it appears worn and in need of upgrades.
Wonder said he gave Efferson until August 27 to vacate the house, but she has not left. In an alleged email to his legal team, Efferson described them as “racist cold-blooded,” an accusation the attorneys rejected.
Efferson has yet to file a response to the lawsuit in court.
