I Just Wanted a Better Life: Kenyan Woman Opens Up on Surviving 12 Failed Marriages

Cynthia Achieng Abok, a Nairobi-based mother of three originally from Kisumu, has shared her painful journey through 12 failed marriages each marked by broken promises, emotional abuse, and survival.

Her first marriage happened when she was still underage. Growing up in a fractured home, where her parents split early and life with either of them proved unbearable, Abok said she was desperate for stability. That desperation often led her into the arms of older men who claimed they would support her, but instead used her.

“Most of them were already married,” she told Citizen Digital. “They promised to take me to school, give me a better life, but it was all a lie. They hid me away like a secret, then tossed me aside.”

In one of the most striking parts of her story, Abok recalled living with a 77-year-old pastor who also left her with a child. He, too, failed to keep his promises and even became abusive. Their relationship ended when his wife found out and sent her packing.

At her lowest, she turned to substance use to cope and took on various jobs just to survive. Yet through it all, Abok hasn’t lost hope.

“I still believe someone good might come along,” she said. “I’m not ready now, but I haven’t closed my heart to love.”

Her story is a raw portrait of resilience, shaped by early trauma, exploitation, and a deep longing for dignity and care.
