It’s decision time at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), as 28 distinguished professors vie for the prestigious position of Vice-Chancellor.
Each candidate is scheduled to be interviewed today, one after the other, by a five-member Selection Committee.
Among those in the race are renowned academics such as Prof Benedict Mbam, Prof Egodi Uchendu, Prof Emenike Ejiogu, Prof Ngozi Ezeilo, and Prof Simon Otuanya—who, notably, is one of three professors from the Faculty of Law at UNN’s Enugu Campus.
The selection process, according to insiders, is merit-based, with each candidate assessed individually and scored independently by all five panel members. Contrary to speculations making the rounds, this is not an election and no candidate's chances are being sabotaged by another. Each contender is judged on their own credentials, vision, and academic track record.
Interestingly, the competition also reflects regional representation. From Ovoko, two candidates, brothers who live across from each other are in the race, highlighting the academic excellence of the Igbo-Eze South LGA, which has three professors in the running, including a female candidate.
Despite the tension and high stakes, the atmosphere has been described as collegial. Candidates have been seen exchanging pleasantries, sharing insights, and encouraging one another—a testament to the camaraderie within the UNN academic community.
The five-person Selection Committee saddled with this crucial responsibility includes:
1. Engr. Kayode Ojo – Chairman
2. Hon. Tahir Mamman
3. Rt. Hon. Eugene Odo
4. Prof. Uju Umoh
5. Prof. Elsie Umeano
With two women on the panel—described by observers as virtuous and trustworthy—the process is expected to be fair and transparent.
As the university community waits with bated breath, one thing is clear: the fate of UNN’s next Vice-Chancellor now lies in the hands of five panelists—and God. Let’s keep them all in our prayers.
