United States Vice President, JD Vance, has warned that any peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine will likely fall short of the expectations of both nations.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance said Washington is pushing for a resolution both Moscow and Kyiv can live with, even if it leaves neither side fully satisfied.
“It’s not going to make anybody super happy. At the end of the day, both the Russians and the Ukrainians will probably be unhappy with it,” he stated.
His remarks follow former President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending the three-and-a-half-year conflict. Trump claimed both countries are edging closer to a ceasefire that might require Ukraine to give up significant territory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, however, rejected the idea, insisting that the country’s constitution prohibits surrendering land.
“Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupiers,” Zelenskiy declared.
Vance revealed that Washington is working towards talks involving Putin, Zelenskiy, and Trump, but argued it would be unproductive for Putin and Zelenskiy to meet before Putin first holds discussions with Trump.
A White House official confirmed Trump remains open to a three-way summit, but said current preparations are focused on the bilateral meeting requested by Putin.
